For most of the twentieth century, a research into consciousness was considered rather disreputable. When i started as an undergrad in the nineties, it was basici was told not to do it. It's not something that you can study scientifically, even though we know it depends on the brain and in clear and measurable ways. Nothing worth reading has been written on it.
