Early on in japanese history, warfare is conducted usually as a punitive campaign. Those warriors are mostly on horseback shooting arrows and footmen following along with what we could see as pikes or hand held spears. We don't get that kind of, large scale, blocks of armies until much later in Japanese history. But no swords. Here is what many people think of when they imagine the samurai, the cinema version, if you like.
