When we elaborate, we expand on an idea or a topic. So means to provide more detail or more detailed evidence or explanation on a particular topic. To conjecture is something that is not necessarily factual but you are drawing certain conclusions from the information you have and certain conclusions based on the information that perhaps you don't have. The author used examples to elaborate on the main theme of his book to expand to give more information. For example: A scientist conjectured there might be life on other planets based on the discovery of water on Mars.
