I think if we went back in time and asked the first couple of centuries of Christians this question, I think they would agree with the dogma. They all agreed that Mary was sanctified before birth and that she never committed any personal sins. It just seems unthinkable to the developed piety of the faithful that we could claim that the mother of God is a sinner. Even if she wasn't conceived in grace, she received grace really early, you know, everyone's in the form with that.
