The False Economy of Scientific Work
Scientific Puritanism is in the end self-defeating. In fact, the only scientific equipment it really pays to buy from the manufacturers are those things which are made on a large scale because of their engineering or other uses. It is very difficult to estimate whether the pay of scientific workers is on average adequate. Although graduate students are grossly underpaid for the first few years, older workers usually receive a salary of between 300 pounds and 600 pounds a year.
