The Tension Between Doping and the Olympics
The list that mysteriously disappeared was largely to do with avoiding unnecessarily soiling the corporate backers of the Olympics and trying to avoid scandal. And I think it speaks to this tension that continues today, which is that these governing bodies has to show that they're doing something. But there's also this simultaneous prayer that, okay, let's police this, but let's not have too many positives and avoid scandal. The 1984 games was a really great example because it's easy for us to say all the LA organizing committee and the IOC are such hypocrites. They say they're anti-drugs. But then they make all these positive disappear.
