Samuel would send an army into byzantine lands and the port city of thessalonici, which would have likely been an important supply source for basil's army. While this was going on, samuel would exercise another part of his plan. He would actually lead his army to link up with basil's army in the misa valley, enhancing the byzantine forces in the pass. Despite samuel's initial successes, suddenly the tables were turned and the bulgarians were either trapped in the valley or retreating. The amount of bulgarian prisoners of war is not completely certain, but we can feel confident that we are talking in the thousands.
