The Story of Vindalanda
Vindalanda is a site that's occupied for at least 400 years. Over the course of the Roman period, they build one fort on top of another. So it's actually at least nine different forts that are built on top of each other. The weight of human occupation over time presses the soil and it squeezes the oxygen out.
