Antiapeleptics in Pregnancy for Bipolar Disorder

The risk for neural tube defects, unfortunately, happens very early on even before women can realize that they're pregnant. Valparate and Carbamazepine have been associated with substantial risk of neural tube defects. Other risks for these antiapeleptic medications include cranial defects and oddly enough, polydactylae. Lymictal is the preferred medication for bipolar disorder and pregnancy.
