The History of the Roman Republic
Rome was a nascent city state that spends 300 years becoming the hegemon of the Italian peninsula. It's still trying to utilize this aristocratic Republican system to govern what is very rapidly becoming an empire. And then it engages in these two very enduring savage wars with Carthage, Carthage being Rome's great power across the sea in North Africa. The Romans celebrated 70 triumphs within 200 years after the Second Punicore.
