Is Proof of Reserves Better Than Proof of Liability?

The Gox bankruptcy proceeding has been happening for almost 10 years now, and that people have still knocked on their funds paid. The silver lining of this is that it's creating a whole new wave of individuals who are taking self custody of their Bitcoin. This is bullish in the sense that less and less Bitcoin is going to be held on these centralized exchanges.
