The Subversion of Women Artists

Women artists were restricted to genres, such as portrait and still life. Sofen Nisba Anguizola's self portrait with Bernadino Campi from 1555 is of her teacher painting her. On first glance, it looks like it's just him dictating her appearance in a quite classical way. But then we have to think about it again. And not only is she painted as 1.5 times as big as him, but she's also got him painting the embellishment of the jacket - something that was normally assigned to an apprentice. This woman, 1555, I mean, she was just extraordinary.
