Are There Goods Internal to Playing Chess?

The distinction you're drawing, I think, has been talked about by Alistair McIntyre in his book, After Virtue. He talks about it as the distinction between goods internal to a practice versus goods external to a practice. So as an example, is chess. There's no essential relationship between getting a trophy and playing chess. You can't have the goods internal to being excellent at chess other than through being excellent at Chess. That's the only way you get the goodsinternal to that practice.
