The History of the Nightmare
Nightmare is caused by, you know, the old hag sighting or if it was already a phenomenon and people started seeing the hag. The thing is like back then there was like witches were feared and were believed in. And so actually that would be the same thing that like it translated over. Henry Fusselli's painting of the nightmare stems back to 1781. It could be one of the earliest depictions of a sleep paralysis demon who sits atop someone's chest.
