The Fine Line Between Wetness and Moisture in Mud

There's this fine line like I know I instantly think back to some cave environments that I've been in and mud at just the right consistency. Is is the mud grippy like maybe rubber or will it fly out from under you like a banana peel? That does come down to something having to do with the water content as well as the particle size so if mud is wet soil or sticky wet soil.
