At the end of the nineteenth century, about 90 % of their income came from gifts andendowments. But medicine was advancing even then and getting more expensive. By the thirties, only about a third of their income was coming that way. A lot of them were bankrupt. And so there were saturday flag days, begging bowls on the wars,.
