Bussy died a year later, but with his estate safely entrusted, the land continued to exist as a place for the public to enjoy. Jamaica Plain was described by one local as a silver n asylum of perfect repose. The solitude in dense woodland created the perfect environment for a romantic afternoon away from the tight roads of brick housing and the clatter of horse-drawn carts that characterised Boston. It also created theperfect environment for the darker events that transpired in the summer of 1865 when the beautiful estates took on a whole different association.
