The Origins of Gothic Architecture
Gothic as a stylistic term, I suppose didn't exist. Gothic really had nothing to do with what we think of when we say Goths. What it grew out of was Abbot Souger of Sondani, which is just outside of Paris. That's where Gothic was born, but it wasn't actually. We'd seen them on Cistercian architecture. It was just that when we get to the early 12th century in Sondani,. that's where we have flying buttresses, vaulting, and the pointed arch altogether.
