The Role of Race and Capitalism in Black Youth Development
In the 70s and 80s, there was a hyper focus on keeping young people off the street. Many programs were created to prevent problems like gang activity or teenage pregnancy. But they also framed young people of color in particular as being at risk for these kinds of things. The problem with this is that it creates what I call racialized paternalism. It's not just about creating safe spaces where kids can learn from each other but rather one-size-fits-all solutions which don't work.
