Is There Any Value in the Beginning of a Lesson?

Chris, I wondered whether there's any value in at the very beginning of a lesson thinking about this problem or set of problems that you want to build towards. It perhaps has some value in priming them to think, oh, goodness, how do I do this? How am I going to get to this? And so one of the things I said to teachers was, well, if you start with some sort of problem and you explain that by the end of this lesson, you will be able to solve this problem, then it makes it pretty blatantly obvious that you want people to think really about their mathematics. But I think you're right. I think work kids aren't emotionally ready.
