Each pilot flew twice a day with each mission taking several hours to brief and debrief. The tempo took a heavy toll it also led to needless tragedies including major fires aboard our carriers the results of exhausted crews making mistakes scores of sailors and aviators died in those accidents. We were losing good men needlessly in the push to maintain the sortie rate.
