The term esotericism has so much loaded into it, that it needs to be really unpacked in such a way. The earliest definition of one of the earliest definitions we have of magic also comes from Plato and says they're just doing religion wrong. And usually this is combined with some form of ritual or ceremony, what John Michael Greer would call would call psychosychos - sort of like, what do you call it?
