To Be on Tenter Hooks

The phrase to be on tenter hooks compares the tenseness, how tense the fabric is, to the feeling of a person being very tense. So imagine you've been stretched like this piece of cloth on the tenter and there's a lot of tension there. You can say, i'm on tenterhooks because I haven't heard any news yet.
