Saul's Use of the Oracular Ephod in the Battle of the Philistines

Saul used the oracular Ephod to obtain information from God as to what steps he should now take against the confused and helpful enemies. Houghner: Saul's hesitancy here contrasted with his later rash haste and prohibiting the soldiers to take refreshment during the battle, shows his own confusion. He begins an oracular inquiry with the Ark and the Ephod but then when the disorder and confusion in the enemy camp grows, he fears that he may be losing his opportunity for a stunning victory.
