The Gregorian Calendar

The Gregorian calendar sought to correct imperfections in the calendar that came before it. The new calendar took away a leap day, three times every 400 years. Our current calendar year is 26 seconds longer than the true astronomical year. This did not sit well with the astronomer John Herschel and he proposed we remove one day every 4000 years.
