It's always a question isn't it because so often in life we just ask people how they are doing without really caring about the answer. My standard response nowadays if someone asks me how I am is to say hmm, I want to give you an honest answer. On the other hand, if someone has just died you've got to pick your moment. If you're at a party and it's not you don't want it to be a long chat necessarily then you're not going to go for a yeah well so and so just died so there's that.
