Composting a Body of Loved Ones

Lagoon funerals use a mixture of wood chips, straw and alfalfa to break down the body. After about six weeks, loved ones are left with a pot of salt to take home. A person's body is laid on a cradle wrapped in a linen shroud before being put into an individual composting vessel. Friends and family place plant material on the body as part of the ceremony. This is the same plant material in which the person is actually composted with straw and wood chips.
