The Value of Ritual

One of the reasons that ritual feels so comforting is precisely because it is familiar. Rituals are very good at creating this because they have rigid structure. People don't seem to know, at least consciously, why they engage in rituals but they find them meaningful and important. In a sense a collective ritual makes us feel like we're members of a transcendent society which extends beyond space and time.
