The question of whether the language models trained only on text can learn meaning presupposes a definition of meaning and there are many definitions of meaning on offer none of which is the official one under some of them definitely yes. Under some of them like it depends right so I mean I think there are like many arguments you can make for why the language model maybe would be indistinguishable from a thing that was embodied. There's other arguments that are like no the ground to the world is the most important thing like that directed experience with it  and if you have that perhaps it's the case that you could learn a structure that's basically the same structure as what you would have had in the grounded case just
