We are tied in so badly that we cannot liberate ourselves through our own works. That's why we need an incarnation of God who can free us and God can forgive us our debts. Krishna says, maybe the one most powerful verse at the very end of the Bhagavad Gita. If you hold on to me, I shall set you free from past sins. From a spiritual perspective, good and bad, both are sinful. The good and the bad, both tires down in this limited existence. This is the incarnation of God.
