Is 80 Characters Good or Bad?

Some people don't want the lines of code that you write to be wider than 80 characters. There's an accessibility type argument. Yet, every developer has a giant forquet, but they should. In my experience, there is a very strong correlation between good developers and short lines. With h d screens and the verbo languages we use these days, it's a bit silly to try to stick to 80 characters.
