The Power of Family Conferencing

Family meetings are a formalized meeting between patient family members and the treating team that's supporting the person. Social work holds the psycho-social perspective within health where others are focused on the medical model or the clinical or patient focused issues. We need to be really clear at that early point you know why what's that about and what is the intention of the meeting. Are we wanting to resolve a discharge plan are we wanting to have the patient and family make an informed decision about various medical interventions or treatments or else. There needs to be a lot of work around preparing for the meeting preparing the family and preparing the treating team for a meeting.
