If you lose the neural machinery that supports self-awareness, if that's affected by damage or disease, then that can abolish the capacity for you yourself to know anything has changed. And that's also, if that area is damaged people, then they can also be unaware that they are performing poorly. This kind of trying to tap into this difficult to pin down change in self- awareness could be really important in developing assays that could perhaps pick dementia up as early as possible. So that's what we're trying to work on at the moment.
