How to Come Up With Wordplay Jokes

With parody, we ape another format of information or entertainment to get our point across. Wordplay is always tricky because when you just use puns or simple wordplay, jokes can come off as really hokey and it's really tough to communicate subtext. So what I would start to do to come up with a wordplay joke for this is list a bunch of words that I would associate with humans being selfish. Maybe there's a wordplay in the word hoard.
