The Evolution of Promiscuity
There is one school of thought that says, ancestral enzymes were probably highly promiscuous. Part of the reason is that machinery was a whole lot more error-prone. And if you have that kind of problem, it's much harder to select for enzyme that catalyzed reactions with high precision. So from this point of view, promiscuity was ancestral. But we don't actually really know.
