The Politicians Lagging Popular Opposition
Politicians are in almost every key respect, a lagging indicator, right? The American people get out in front and decide they want something. And politicians then scramble to make it seem like they've always been in favor of such a thing. I think the best example that we've got of this is Hillary Clinton, who has long been seen for whatever the reason as a champion of gay rights. But everybody just gives her a complete and total free pass on this because she was against gay marriage for decades.
