The Generalist Path in Sports

Athletes who go on to become elite have early on they spend less time in deliberate practice than lower level athletes. They delay specializing until later than peers of plateau at lower levels so both Tiger and Roger again made it to the pinnacle but we hear the story that we all tell is the exception not the norm. Having this broader base one allows you to build skills that accomplish what psychologists call transfer which is to be able to take your knowledge and skills and apply them to new situations that you've never seen before.
