Layoffs That Don't Break Your Company
Hiring decision is a long term investment decision. Following a period of intense hiring with layoffs might reflect poor strategy or at least a write-off of an investment and there's this great research report that came out recently in the Harvard Business Review titled layoffs that don't break your company. Nokia has gone through periods of hyper growth and defeat and in those periods they conducted layoffs once with regard for their employees and then again in a more nuanced manner. In response Nelson Peltz has now pulled away from his proxy battleproxy battle solved but a fateful decision was made by Disney to lay off 7,000 workers.
