The More We Confront Challenges, the Easier It Gets

Bilbo had his little part to play even in the death of the dragon. He didn't kill the dragon himself, but he did have a small part in seeing the dragon's weakness which led to the dragon being killed. Without challenges, without experiences, it becomes boring. Life becomes a test, less and less boring.
