Activated patients reduce implicit bias

PNAS Science Sessions

CHAPTER

How Does Physician's Immediate Bias Affect Patient Behavior?

Doctors were asked to test their implicit bias by pairing positive or negative words with faces of black people or white people. When doctors had more pro white or anti black it scores, more implicit bias, these were associated with the doctors having higher quality social interactions with the white patients and lower qualitysocial interactions with the black patients. Patients can have the power to act in ways that make it more likely that they're going to receive unbiased care from their doctors. Ask an active listener with your doctor about what you know and what you don't know. You can subscribe to science sessions on NPR iReport.
