The Midwives Are Reducing Israel to a Feminine Role in Egypt
In Genesis, Pharaoh tells his people that to take all the Hebrew boys and throw them into the water. Then Pharaoh gave his order to all his people: Every Hebrew boy that is born, he must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live. And so now you really have this final image of wanting to reduce the Israelite identity to water and throw it into the fluidity of potential for the Egyptian nation. So we have to be able to see these themes as kind of the civilizational part in Genesis.
