My father served his king in the Great War. He told me tales of courage and heroism of men fighting for the glory of their country. But when he was drunk, as he was more and more towards the end, he told other stories that didn't always make sense. Once or twice he talked to me about the wild Desserters - these men who had fled from their units but would run into No Man's Land.
