The commander of the latvian riflemen surveyed his available forces and found them augmented only by some hungarian prisoners of war who had turned communist in the prison camps. The left s r detachments fought tenaciously for what was by now a collapsing lost cause. By noon on july seventh, they had triumphed. There was no popular uprising. They had not forced the government to change policy. War with germany was not, in fact, now inevitable. It took six or seven hours worth of fighting in the streets, but the lavian commander was right.
