First to the North Pole

In 1926, Richard E. Bird claimed to be the first person to fly over the North Pole in an aeroplane. He was a US naval officer who served in the First World War but never left North America. After the war he became very interested in long distance aeroplane flight. But his efforts were shut down by the US government and Charles Lindbergh came along at the right time to do it.
