Phenomenon is just going so you can set up strategies and different things around, and they're decorators you put on top of your test. So somehow, hypothesis will fill in the variables that you put your there. It also checks the time, I think, doesn't make sure it doesn't like run for hours or something like that. The people behind hypothesis actually are pretty good at coming up with some decent test cases that break a lot of kinds of software.
