Bredes Panopticon
Dutch architect Johann Metzler designed Bredes Panopticon in 1886. The domed prison became the first part of a large complex that grew to include a courthouse, a detention center and a women's prison. There were 205 cells - each one slightly smaller than an 11 by 11 foot room. Inmates spent almost their entire days in their cells in complete solitude.
