Reading and writing in english is that it works on the phonemic level. Phonics teaches children to memorize tens of thousands of more complex symbols attached to significantly more complex sounds. The most worrying thing about this, giving pomphonic is that it as initial success for a lot of children. They have been sent down a dead end when it comes to developing as a fluent reader. It's almost impossible to unpick those difficulties.
