And I think it's time to bring Jean Perdi back into the story permanently. She was a pretty amazing character and by all accounts, this wouldn't have happened without her. The Daily Mail originally purchased Born Hall, the Jackabean house, and they appointed architects and surveyors because it needed lots of work from a crumbling manor house. In 1979 they pulled out because apparently the venture was too risky. Steptoe and Edwards raised money and bought it themselves.
