Evangelical christians were, by and large, at the time, pro choice. The notion that they would be up in arms about this abortion decision was utterly foreign to evangelicals. This is completely forgotten in the contemporary discourse. It washa ged, basically, by ronald regan in the late 19 seventies when he ran for president. Because because they were, their anti catholic prejudice associated being pro or anti abortion with being catholic.
