David rosenhan wrote a famous paper about being sane in insane places. He got eight people into mental hospitals and told them to say empty, hollow, thud. They were all diagnosed as schisophranic or manic depressive - but none of them had any history of mental illness. The power of belief of the label itself seems to be the poignant takehomb from that demonstration.
